Plagarism
The act of plagiarism or plagiarizing is taking someone else's words and using them in your own work without giving credit or using them as if they were your own words. If a person were to say, "I am not a crook", then they would be plagiarizing. However, is it really deemed plagiarizing? Plagiarism has been an ethical dilemma throughout and beyond anyone's school career. How do teachers catch us when we do plagiarize? They use software that searches the web and scans the students' articles. If anything matches to an extent, it is considered plagiarism. However, why do the teachers scan the article in the first place?The software works by taking a given article and scanning a given database, if a return appears and the paper has a lot yellow marks in big blotches, the student has obviously been plagiarizing in their paper. An ethical dilemma is something where the result can go either way based on the way you think and your beliefs. Ethical dilemmas have plagued mankind since the dawn of time and the computer has added a new horizon. In the past, a paper could take days from the multiple trips to the library to do research and putting the paper together. Well known news reporters even plagiarize. Most ethical dilemmas with the computer relate to stealing identity, hacking, Internet dating and plagiarism. Even though the students think they can out smart the teachers by changing a few words, there is still the possibility the student could be caught cheating. The process of using the computer to write a paper has made the entire paper process much simpler. Computer access has made it much easier to plagiarize and to catch plagiarism at the same time. A few of the passages seem themselves to have been plagiarized, if only inadvertently" (Carnevale, June 2003). Is it that the teachers do not trust any of their students to never cheat? Then, why do the teachers not trust us enough not to scan the article? This is why this could be considered an ethical dilemma. Before the Internet, it would have had to come from a book. There's just one problem with the article. The vast majority of information on the Internet has made a significant change in the way people think. Teachers can help prevent plagiarism by structuring research assignments so that copying of material from references is very difficult.
