The Wage Gap

             Thesis: The wage gap that exists between Black Americans and White Americans appears to be a sagaciously orchestrated plan. However, could there be another factor that exist which is larger than Prejudice and Discrimination?

             A. Pursuit of happiness and liberty
             In an article in The American Journal of Sociology, dated January, 2004, authors Matt L. Huffman and Philip N. Cohen, analyzed the possible mechanisms behind the wage gap that exist in areas that are predominately black. The duo postulate that job segregation and devaluation of jobs are the two primary mechanisms used in the wage gap process. However, one might ask, why was it necessary to isolate blacks and what was gain by doing so?
             Could it have been with the abolishment of slavery the white population wanted to keep things the way in which they had become accustomed to? In fact, according to economist R.H. Tawney, "[...] every generation regards as natural the institutions to which it is accustomed" (Polednak, 1997). White people had become accustomed to the separation of white-black societies and did not see anything wrong with segregating black people. As a matter of fact, Presidents Lincoln and Grant with the approval of Congress had planned to send blacks back to Africa. "Some black intellectuals, down to W.E.B Du Bois and S. Carmichael, supported various forms of colonization" (Polednak, 1997). Instead of the colonization of blacks, an internal colony model of blacks has emerged (Henry, 1990), along with calls for blacks to decolonize themselves from a color caste society that devalues blackness (especially higher degrees of black skin color) (Holt,1995).
