Sex Education in secondary schools
Education has always been a significant part of Greek humanity. It is consist of many different courses, among them sex education as apart of biology. Sex education is divided into two completely different programs, Comprehensive sex education and Abstinence-only education. The advantages of a comprehensive sex education over the second one vary, from the way they approach sex to the different things they teach.Comprehensive sex education is a sex education program that teaches a combination of two things abstinence and contraception. This program is composed of human anatomy, reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases (comprehensive sex ed). Teachers try to pass to their students the message of contraception, even and outside of a marriage, as the best solution for avoiding transmitted diseases or unwanted pregnancies. They provide them with all the needed information and they explain in detail all the things they need to know about contraception (Coeyman 1). The aim of comprehensive sex education is not to persuade teens to abstain from sex until they get married, but to succeed in reducing the chances of pregnancy on a very young age and the likelihood of diseases being transmitted (Zenit News Agency).
Taking into account these results we can understand that teenagers do need a comprehensive sex education. However, a review of a number of studies proved that abstinence-only education is not able to reduce pregnancies (Sex Education). The results illustrated that only the 61. The survey's topic was "Sexually Active Greek population per Sex and age". Comprehensive sex education is the most safe and effective way for the kids to be taught about sex. However, if they are to have pre-marital sex, something that is not at all encouraged, they should be aware that there are some risks. If comprehensive sex education was applied in schools then we would have an increase of the percent of people, male and female, who use condoms when they are sexually active. 6% of the age 16-45 is sexually active? Taking into consideration the statistics that showed that almost all Greek people are sexually active and even people that are in their teenage years, abstinence-only program would have less or none effect in Greek schools. A Pan-Hellenic investigation was conducted from 6 October until 31 October 2001 and 1. This program offers students information that makes them more open minded and more ready to face any situation, because they will know how to behave, how to protect themselves from diseases or unwanted pregnancies and also how to take correct decisions which will not regret later. Abstinence, until marriage, programs are trying to convince teenagers that abstinence is the best way to go in order to discover themselves (Mindus) and the only way to reduce dramatically the rate of pregnancies among teens (abstinence-only ed). Contraception is a matter that is not being included in their teaching. The more appropriate program is the comprehensive sex education.
