Counseling Theory

All theories and their corresponding practices assist clients in changing to meet their personal goals. Family theorists promote the essential elements of system intervention. Family systems vary in their ways of relating to families or couples. Some use a directive, problem-solving manner, while others try to join using an empathic stance. For example, Virginia Satir emphasized family connection using a model called conjoint family therapy. In 1983 Virginia Satir's human validation process model grew from her strong intentions to bring each family to its potential (Satir & Baldwin 1983). Her particular approach emphasizes communication as well as emotional experiencing. Satir felt that the technique being practiced is not as important as the relationship between the therapist and the family. She also believed the therapist is a model of effective communication and a helpful resource for developing just that in a family. Satir acknowledged and believed in observing three generations of family life. If she saw particular patterns, she felt the need to bring them to life in the present by using genograms or by reconstruction. Children come into the world as part of a preexisting system, family being the most common

Its non-controlling aspect allows depiction of the client and his/her relationship to his/her significant person. It's interesting how Ted was never physically or verbally cruel to Rose. She feels helpless without others, therefore she says and does what she thinks others expect of her. If an opportunity arises that leads to a disagreement of some sort, the situation is viewed as an opportunity for growth rather than attack on the family. In order for the family to create positive patterns of communication, an individual must feel supported when taking risks, and venturing out. Ted's situation coming from a very well established family both financially and socially, may have led to some of their marital distress as well. This kit was devised in 1968 by a family therapist named David Kvebaek. Satir's approach to family therapy distinguishes between functional versus dysfunctional communication. Satir actually positioned each family member in relation to the whole (physical placement in the therapy room). It particularly becomes a problem when children carry such a pattern into their adult interactions. Family sculpting focuses on increasing members' awareness of how they function and how others view them in their system. The structure of a functional family system is characterized by freedom and flexibility, as well as by open communication. Satir determines whether a family is functional of dysfunctional. I remember hearing my parents say, "We keep our family business in this house," "Don't bring attention to yourself," "Don't question us, do as we say. By exploring her family of origin, there could have been increased opportunities to resolve her conflict with Ted.
