Emotional Hook, Line and Sinker

             Our assignment required us to locate an ad and to give a description and analysis. I searched through several different magazines. The one I decided on grabbed my attention with its cute humor and style. The ad is an image of a child's feet wearing a pair of shoes that are too big. The ad was published in the June 2005, edition of "O, The Oprah Magazine", for a company called RedEnvelope.com. The main intent of this ad is to get the reader to shop their website and or catalog.
             RedEnvelope.com is attempting to reach a specific group of people with their ad. They are targeting suburban wives and mothers. They hit there mark by publishing in a magazine whose main demographic is women. While this alone is a strong way to gain potential customers, they go further with the content of the ad. The images and colors they have chosen are powerful emotional hooks. The main image is that of a small child walking in a pair of men's shoes that are far too big. The child is also dressed in red long johns. Finally, the words on the page subtly communicate their intentions well.
             The ad automatically gives the reader a sense of comfort. As I said before, the main audience consists of wives and mothers. The image of the child really reaches them. It plays upon the nurturing side of women. They look at the ad and see the child and think of their own child playing in her husband's shoes. This immediately gets the reader to associate this company with a pleasant memory. The child's red long-john's, also have many emotions tied to them. They cause the reader to think of warm, comfort, and love. The red of the long-john, also direct the reader to thoughts of Christmas time. The ad now has us associating RedEnvelope.com with two pleasant memories. A final push to get the readers interest in the company comes in the form of the written word.
