The importants of story examination of Moses / Burning Bush
Stories have the innate ability to serve many purposes at once, for this reason they can be considered the most versatile, the most complex, and also the simplest means of conveying a point. Take, for example, the Bible passage in the book of Exodus that starts with verse one of chapter three, and ends with the fifteenth verse of the same chapter. These fifteen verses appear as nothing more than a simple, short account of Moses' encounter with a burning bush, a physical representation of God, atop Mt. Horeb. However, a person simply reading this text as a historical record, or simply as a tale meant to entertain, would rob themselves of a master-piece story, as well as its hidden meaning, and a deeper understanding. Any story that has passed the test of time and is still being told today deserves not only our admiration, but also our undivided attention so that it may impart to us its true purpose and enlighten us with its meaning. As we study the Bible in general we find that there are discrepancies that are hard to explain. While appealing to the average person and describing the past culture with interesting events and exciting bits about society and every day life, instilling a basic familiarity with the time, the Bibl
Take the burning bush for example. He clearly asks "Who am I?" knowing he is only a farmer, with no ambitions other than to take care of the sheep, Moses is left feeling like God has picked the wrong man. The impact this sign could have on a person does not become apparent until the question is asked: what defines holy ground? Is holy ground a place worshipped by others? Is holy ground only in a temple or church? Or is holy ground only places, and not something we can carry with us? The authors and editors of this story do not go so far as to define holy ground, leaving the possibility that the area on top of the mountain was always holy ground, that the ground was holy for Moses as he watched the sheep, or that it only became holy when God said it was so. " What happens to the signs created for specific people when the average person won't take the time to look twice at anything odd? Or for people not willing to believe it could be for them? The knowledge that he was standing on holy ground helped Moses to see the reality of his situation and listen to the voice of God. He came for Moses, and he found him, that Moses feels inadequate is unimportant. " That response clearly conveys the meaning that who Moses is, with regard to his talents, gifts, and abilities is virtually insignificant compared to the fact that God will be with him. Catching his attention the bush called Moses closer, where the Lord himself waited. Stories like this were meant to enlighten, they were meant to make you think, to think beyond the written text to the meaning waiting to be found. A burning bush however, was not that uncommon, and only after realizing that the bush was not being consumed did Moses become intrigued. As Soggin states plainly in his book:The biblical sources are rich in anecdotes, popular tradition and elements of folklore. This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations. Upon initial study of this story, or more precisely: this segment of and beginning to; the Exodus quest, the simple theme of a 'call for heroism' becomes apparent. " Since the scripture has been studied and the themes identified, the first thought is to move on to the next passage, but, identifying the main themes in a passage is only the first step to truly understanding the meaning behind the story. Since Moses' sign from god was only apparent when he took the time to study it, "It would be foolish, for instance, to rationalize the burning bush, as though this vision were something that could have been seen with the objective eye of a camera. Without the pressure he was receiving is it possible that Moses would have run away in fear.
