1984
1984 is based on a Utopia gone awry. Winston Smith believes there was a time before "Big Brother", the present government, when life was better than it is now.Thought crime is the worst crime of all, even though there are no laws, if caught committing thought crime the punishment is death. Winston knows he's a walking dead man after he buys a Diary and eventually a glass paperweight from the parole side of the town. Then he learns from a note given to him by the dark haired girl, Julia, that she loves him. Which is contradictory to what he thought she was, a thought cop who was going to turn him in. They have a secret love affair, and eventually use the upstairs bedroom, in the shop where he had bought those illegal items, to hide out while together.
Winston and Julia get separated when put in the Ministry of Love, where they are beaten and tortured until they finally are broken into loving Big Brother completely, and no longer loving one another. Then they are arrested for their Thought crimes and love affair. I would rate this book with four out of five stars. The book kept you enthralled for the majority of the time but it took so long to comprehend some of the time that it was just not a easygoing read. It would have never crossed my mind that it was another way to control the economy and the country. Then after a few months of being freed back to civilization, are "vaporized", their records deleted, and they now never existed. The reason the war was everlasting most captivated my interest. It turns out the old shop keeper was a member of the thought police. In general I believe most people would enjoy this book immensely as long as they do not mind a long read. They also shortened the language so to prevent thought crime from the start. This book enthralled my interest with its captivating motives and intriguing world. Mind control used on the people is in a sinister way, sly. If there is only one word in the language to describe everything considered necessary to be conversed then there can be no bad thoughts. There was only one problem with such an intellectual book, which was how slow of a read it was.
