Early Immigrants
America: Was it really the land of opportunities? America was known as a land full of promises and opportunities for all people. On account of this and many other reasons are why Eastern European immigrants came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite the promises of what this new land had to offer, immigrants discovered many positive opportunities to succeed as well as negative circumstances that stood as a roadblock on the road to achieving their hopes and dreams. The dream of a better life was the incentive that attracted people to America. There was the possibility to actually move up in the world, as opposed to the Old World where a person was basically stuck in the status where born. America furthermore offered freedoms. Just the chance to taste what it is like to be free brought over many immigrants. Who could fathom having the choice of where to work, where to live, and the freedom to worship and practice religious beliefs? In order to overcome the stereotypes and succeed in the ferocious new land many teachers were needed. According to Mary Antin these kind people taught her family how to cook on the stove, make a fire, use a telephone, how to trade and bargain, that policeman were not scary, and most importantly the English language. The unfortunate reality was that older siblings, like Mary's sister Frieda, had to go immediately to work. This left many without any choice but to turn to factories or sweatshops for work. A good example is Michael Gold's selection Jews Without Money. Many people were hurt or even got diseases. These were the conditions immigrants labored from dusk till dawn in order to make enough money to pay rent. Sadly this opportunity of education was usually offered to only young children. In the summer just imagine the smell that a breeze couldn't blow away. They also introduced to Mary and her family what a department store was. In the winter people were cold and huddled in the kitchen to soak up the heat from the stove. " Education was the main juncture that enlightened many immigrants' hearts. The idea of choosing your occupation was an opportunity that had a positive and negative side. Most immigrants in their heart and soul had extremely high hopes and dreams.
