Perspectives of war

             Perspectives of war have varied overtime, from people viewing it as glorious and honourable, to seeing it as a horrific and horrible occurrence. In this essay I will talk about two poems Hero by Siegfreid Sassoon and Disabled by Wilfred Owen and also a movie called We Were Soldiers, which is based on the Vietnam War. I will discuss how they have affected my understanding of War and how the composers have gotten their message across to the responders.
             Disabled by Wilfred Owen, is about the casualties and permanent wounds of war, although it is also talking about physical wounds, it also gives a sense of the victim having mental wounds, like inferiority complex and such. The poem has changed my understanding of war by making me realise that people become maimed and they may not live happy lives, the poem shows the perspective of many people who have lost limbs and other parts of the body. A perspective that is sad and brings sorrow to you, the poem makes you feel very empathetic by using visualisation and metaphors. The poem contrasts what he used to see with what he sees now, it shows how he feels he is deprived and you feel sorry for him. In the poem he says he threw away his legs by joining the army, which made me think that is what people did to their lives by joining up. The poem really brings you down to earth and helps you to look outside of your own box and that there are many problems around.
             The poem Hero by Siegfreid Sassoon shows the lies of war in the context of a mother receiving news of her fallen son. The officer is essentially "lieing through his teeth" to the mother. He talks up the son about his death saying it was honourable and heroic and the mother accepts his lies and it seems to dampen the her sorrow of her sons death. The mother in my mind becomes rather docile from the mans words and has no real thoughts about what is going on she is wrapped up in his lies and h
