Does God Exist?
For millennia, man has struggled with this question of God's existence. While man has developed the "big bang theory" and the "theory of evolution", the Bible has been considered by many, an accurate account of God's existence. Not many people who believe in God believe the bible is a theory. There are those who believe only select accounts of God are portrayed in the bible to credit his, or should I say her existence. One view of the existence debate can be established through the lack of observation. An a posteriori argument, or the belief that the truth can be known without observation, can be opposed by an a priori argument, or the belief that the observation must exist for the truth to be known. In each case, one can conclude evidence to support each position. One posteriori argument is the teleological or design argument. The universe we exist in exhibits apparent design, that is, the ordering of complex means to the fulfillment of intelligible goals, ends or purpose. It must be because thought and order was planned into a grand design. This complexity could only be achieved by an intelligent will and order. I have, within my understanding, my idea and definition of God. Gaunilon, another monk, used the perfect tropical island argument. Does the perfect being only exist in your mind? If it is possible that the perfect being only exists there, then it is not the most perfect conceivable being because such a being that exists both in your mind as well as reality would be more perfect. If God exists in the understanding alone, then a greater being can be conceived, one which exists in reality. Gaunilon's argument was able to show that Anselm's reasoning must be faulty. We know that there is not a perfect tropical island. God's plan and purpose has been replaced with facts, logical evaluations and natural explanations. In today's society, convictions are often the result of years of teaching, learning and experience. We can then establish the basis for doubt and weakness in the design argument. The mere ability to conceive of the perfect tropical island would logically mean the perfect tropical island existed.
