Socialization

             The term puppet is defined as "...one whose behavior is determined by the will of others," (dictionary.com, definition #4). Such a definition implies inactive involvement on the part of the puppet and inherent manipulation by a puppet master. Socialization, on the other hand, is defined as "...the process by which people learn the characteristics of their group-the knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and actions thought appropriate for them," (Henslin, p. 61). By definition alone, the terms socialization and puppet cannot be linked because learning is an intrinsically active process. Although some may argue the learning process can be manipulated so that learners are mindless containers to be filled with knowledge, modern thoughts on human cognition argue otherwise. Human beings are active participants in their own learning and, thus, socialization.
             Humanity is ever evolving. Essential in this progression is the evolution of our cultural norms and socialization processes. Socialization is an active process. It is not stagnant and is never complete. We are constantly being socialized and resocialized as we act and interact with various agents of socialization and within various social environments. For example, although some people may form a lasting relationship with a single significant other, others may become attached to several significant others throughout the course of a lifetime. Likewise, peer groups may change and values may evolve as we grow older and progress through life. As we form and break these valuable human relationships, our norms and values are evolving and we are being socialized and resocialized while we socialize and resocialize those around us. We are influenced as we influence others.
