Democracy and Japan: Politics

The term ‘democracy’ has its origin in the Greek word, ‘people’ and ‘rule’, which means that rule of the people, rather than oligarchy or one person (monarchy, dictatorship). It is opposite to the totalitarian, authoritarian or feudalism. It is a system of government where the general public of the state have a say in the law and policy that affect them. Modern democracy is different from the way ancient Greek practiced. The Greek practice was ‘pure’ democracy, which all citizens met, discussed, and voted to decide law and policy. Political parties such as Democratic Party and majority of people were against the idea of sending the troops. The prime minister is elected by the cabinet. The emperor does not have any effective power but is only the symbol of the sate. The country must remember who is centralised in politics, the people of Japan. The most important filed that the country should improve on is “referendum”. Prime minister, Koizumi Junichiro is from Liberal Democratic Party of Japan.

Recently, Japan had a huge debate on whether Japan should join the Iraq war with America to rebuild the country. Judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the Cabinet, except the Chief Judge is appointed by the Emperor.

The Japanese parliament is called the Diet. The constitution of Japan proclaims that the Diet is “the highest organ of state power”.

Famous philosopher, Aristotle, stated “The best democracy is not an extreme democracy”, as he believes that any form of extreme constitution is less durable than moderate or mixed.

Overall, Japan is moderate democratic country, but it is the most durable and “the best” democratic country in Asia. To promulgate the law or policy, it must be approved by the both houses, so that the power is balanced within the Diet.
