A Seperate Peace

             In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the reader is first introduced to a rule-breaking, daredevil named Finny. If one were to try to describe Finny's character they would have trouble since Finny is such a unique and original person. In the moving novel, A Separate Peace, Finny's character is best described as athletic, loyal, creative and rebellious.
             Finny's athleticism is proven by his ability to play and create sports. Finny's excellence at playing sports is displayed early in the novel. Finny breaks a swimming record the first time he tries to break it. His amazing ability to play any sport proficiently shows his athletic talent. Gene states on page 37, "To switch to a new sport suddenly just for a day, and immediately break a record in it-that was about as neat a trick as dazzling a reversal as I could, to be perfectly honest, possibly imagine." Not only does Finny play sports well, but he used good sportsmanship. When he breaks the swimming record, he refuses to tell anybody about it and makes Gene promise not to tell anyone. Finny brushes off the broken record as if it was nothing and moves on to a different activity claiming that swimming in pools is ridiculous anyway. Later in the novel, Finny objects that the sport of badminton be played during the summer session. Finny's ability to think quickly aids him in this situation for within minutes of objecting the activity of badminton, Finny comes up with an all new sport. Not only is the new sport, which is titles "Blitzball", more appealing to the boys, but Finny gets praised furthermore for his athletic ability. By creating this sport, Finny unknowingly creates a sport that he truly dominates the other boys at. Gene says that the sport of Blitzball may still be being played at Devon.
