Music of Love
Valentine's Day is coming up, so I would like to talk about one of the famous pieces in music literature that is expressing personal feelings of its composer, Moonlight Sonata by L. van Beethoven. Well-known Beethoven's Moonlight Piano Sonata was written in 1801. The sonata got its name when poet Ludwig Rellstab described the music as being "like moonlight shining on a lake" in 1832.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the first movement reflects his sadness, the second movement is like a flower between two abysses, a lonely, poor, but beautiful flower stuck between two deep trenches of darkness and sadness, and the third movement reflects his anger at his deafness and probably the loss of his beloved lady. I have heard my mother, who is a pianist, playing Moonlight Sonata many times. Since Moonlight Sonata is a "love music", it has been used in many special events, such as weddings. It exemplifies the emotion in movement I, playfulness and delicacy in movement II and passion of romantic love in movement III. When she plays it, I can feel the sadness, love, passion, and madness in the music. Moonlight Sonata is one my favorite pieces. It always amazes me how music can convey someone's thoughts as much as it does in Beethoven's music. Beethoven was working on that sonata when he started noticing his deafness, which was slight at a time, and as some scholars believe, he also lost his lover. It is perfect background music for some Art Exhibitions and Art presentations. I am sure everybody would experience same feelings as I do when I listen to Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven.
