COMPARATIVE PRE-20TH CENTURY PROSE
'Both John Thomas and Tony Kytes are darling characters who try to manipulate the women around them. Yet in the end both men are weaker that the women in each story.Compare the two male characters and discuss whether or not you agree with this statement.'Tony Kytes, the Arch - Deceiver' was written by Thomas Hardy, The story was written in the 19th century and was published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in 1891. Some of Thomas Hardy's major works include Under the Greenwood Tree (1872) and Human Show (1925). His stories usually revolved around marriage and relationships. His stories, such as 'Tony Kytes' were set in rural surroundings, and portrayed the situation of women of that time. Tickets Please' was written By D.H Lawrence. Written in the 20th century, around the time of World War I, D.H Lawrence's work mainly consists of stories about relationships and love. Tickets Please is written and show how different genders were treated at that time. In the story 'Tickets Please' the main male character is John Thomas. John Thomas' position in society is quite high as in the lines 'the inspectors' and 'the chief' show that he is higher than the cripples and hunchbacks which are
After the women beat him physically, he chooses Annie; I think that John Thomas chooses Annie because he secretly knows that she wouldn't want him. "What you won't have me Hannah?" as shown in this line. As the story progresses slightly, John Thomas seems to realise something is different and starts to act nervously, 'said he, rising and reaching for his overcoat'. But I think Annie isn't happy because she may know he knows this 'fact'. In both stories, both male characters make women feel like they have the male's full attention, but in 'Ticket Please' John Thomas acts more physically towards the women to attract them to him. This differs from Tony Kytes because even though Tony flirts with all the women it is not physical. Tony Kytes seems attractive to woman in the way he can make them feel, as highlighted in the line, 'He looked very hard at a small speck in your eye when talking to 'ee. "There's no place like home girls' they don't like him at the moment as he is being sexist and enjoying the attention form the girls. As shown in the lines, 'he flirts and walks out with the newcomer' this highlights that his prey are usually the ones new to the job. This illustrates how he knows something is wrong as he is now trying to leave discreetly. But Hannah refuses his offer "never - I would sooner marry" also in the lines, not have refused 'and' her father had not been there', show how her answer has been influenced by her fathers presence. John Thomas is more open, as most of the women know what he is like but still are attracted to him. The way Unity smiles suggest that it may be practised like she has planned to manipulate Tony and 'tender chide' shows her feminine charms used towards Tony.
