Critical essay

"People say that a book shouldn't be judged by its cover, though at the same time they judge a person by their appearance" In life as well as in literature people get judged by their appearance. Some of these judgments cause death or extreme alienation from the society. The book To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a non fiction article by James C. Foster "A Murder in Virginia " and "The Scottsboro Boys Trial " by Douglas O. Linder demonstrate a perfect example of people getting judged by their appearance and not by the facts. Black men were being accused of crimes that they have not committed; as a result their lives were taken away. Moreover, throughout history, there was always discrimination between black men and white men. The whites were always in power of the blacks and had more to say in society. In politics and in courts the whites came first and their voices were in power. People believed everything that a white man had to say, and accused a black man of false crimes. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird ,a black character by the name of Tom Robinson, was accused of raping and abusing a 16 year old white girl. All the evidence showed that Tom Robison was innocent, though he was still considere

In To kill A Mockingbird Mayella Ewell was constantly beaten by her dad and she claimed she was raped by Tom Robinson. The time that both of the trials took place in, Alabama 1930, was exactly the same. Regardless three days later eight out of nine man were sentenced to death even though the witnesses all felt that the white women were lying. " There was no evidence found that the black people killed the white lady, though they were still accused of murder and were killed. Foster wrote an article "Murder in Virginia". In the Scottsboro trial the women that claimed to be raped were known as prostitutes of the area but their word was still taken over the innocent African American men. In addition, the journalist by the name James C. The Trial Began with a charge of rape made by the white women against the African American men. The thought of "All blacks were liars, and all blacks are wrongdoers", was a major part of all of these trails. Both juries ignored evidence, for example, that the woman suffered no injuries in the Scottsboro trail, and Tom had a useless left arm in To Kill A Mockingbird. The Scottsboro trial lasted for more than two decades. Accusing him of rape was a perfect cover to all the things that had happened to her in the past. Every aspect of both trials was the same except for the outcomes. In it he wrote about how innocent black men are accused in a crime that was never committed.
