Global Tension: Causes analysed

             At the turn of the 21st century, we can clearly see that there is an increasing trend of conflicts around the world. Conflicts are not just merely between people, but as the world moves towards globalization, we can see how two or even more countries having conflicts over several matters. There are many factors that are responsible for the conflicts of the world today, namely, territorial disputes, ideological differences, arms race, historical baggage, terrorism, religion, media and propaganda, and last but not least, competition for natural resources.
             Territory disputes are one of the major factors that led to global conflicts. Countries are trying to get as much as territory as they can, especially when that territory is of important usage to them. Also, territories meant national pride and the country's sovereignty. Since the ancient times, many countries have been attempting to control as many territories as they can, even if the territory does not belong to them. This can be clearly portrayed in many examples like India and Pakistan over Kashmir, Japan and South Korea over Takeshima, or Dokdo which the Koreans called, and also Singapore and Malaysia over Pedra Branca. All these disputes over territories clearly show the power of the political leaders who are trying to stir up nationalism among the people, claiming that their national sovereignty is at stake. Also, the leaders sent petrol boats to these areas. The frequent collision and intrusion as claimed by another country often exacerbate the situation further. Some irrational political leaders also threatened the ending of the diplomatic ties between the countries and promised to use war to settle the disputes. All these heighten the tensions between the countries further.
