The Simpsons: Character Representations

             The cartoon The Simpsons is one of the most popular shows on television and has been for much of its' 14 year existence because of the shows many unique characters. The show consists of over 60 characters, which make represent a variety of different traits of American society. Many of these characters portray such similar qualities to real people that it is sometimes possible to accept them as humans opposed to just cartoon characters. According to the article The Simpsons: A Mirror of the U.S. Society, " even though everything is exaggerated, the Simpson family is definitely a reflection of the American lifestyle". In examining the entire cast of The Simpsons it is best to divide them into two groups, the Simpson family and the rest of the towns people. The characters of The Simpsons all portray a symbolic nature of the perceived American society.
             The main characters of the show are the Simpson family, which includes Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. Each character has their own personality with uniquely American values, which make them seem more believable with every episode. They contain the American family values such as typical hardworking, funny, middle class, down to earth family. Through these qualities the Simpson family exhibits the entire behavior one would expect from a typical American family.
             Homer Simpson represents many of the characteristics of the stereotypical American father and husband. Homer is the typical blue-collar family man, spending most of his days working as safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant and spending his nights with his family. Like many middle aged American men, Homer enjoys bowling, donuts, and drinking beer with his buddies at Moe's Bar. Homer is also portrayed as lazy and unintelligent to make him seem more life-like.
