The Disuniting of America
"Those who want to join America must be received and welcomed by those who already thnk they own America." ... "Not only must they want assimiliation and integration; we must want assimilation and integration too. With the complacent majority than with the beleaguered minorities." (pg24) Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. Who Schlesinger was referring to by "they" are the minorities and the new immigrants to the United States of America. And when he said "we" he was referring to the people who consider themselves Americans. We do have the power to make this a just land for all but, the question is will we ever do that? The Constitution has rights for everyone supposedly. The constitution was initially written for the rich white man and this will never change unless the people do something about it. Yes, I agree with Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. that we must except everyone and strive to be "one people." How can we say that we are moving in the direction of becoming "one people" when there is still segregation going on. I am not saying that segregation is going on like it was afte
Abraham Lincoln "all men are created equal, except Negroes. Why is there a difference between the schools in Oakland and lets say Pleasanton, which is a dominant white area. ' When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except Negroes, and foreigners, and catholics. One of the reason they will not have a good education because they will not be able to afford it. The majority will always have it easy while the minority will always suffer. When a murder occurs in an all white area it is very big news and all the stations will cover it everyday. Schools in Oakland will have a few Caucasians in them and schools in Pleasanton will have a few minorities in them. In Oakland murders occur almost every week and there will be a brief article about it in the news paper. There always was and will be more doors open for the majority and this will never change. The minorities who do not get a good education will always stay at the same level and never move up in life. When old-line Americans, for example, treat people of the other nationalities and races as if they were indigestible elements to be shunned and barred, they must not be surprised if minorities gather bitterly unto themselves and damn everybody else. Yes, more of the minorities have more money than they did before but, they can not live very well because the standard of living also has gone up. But the triumph over racism is incomplete. They will never get good opportunities for good jobs because they do not have the education. This is still a form of segregation people might not realize it but, we have not come very far from where we were.
