"It's a girl," the doctor said in relief, "she's out and healthy." It was May 13, 1988 when I came out weighing seven pounds and eight ounces and my parents decided to name me Jessica Michelle. It was a happy moment for my parents; they felt as if the long nine months had finally paid off, and they got their bundle of joy. My mom and dad were so proud that I was out into this big world filled with people that they could show me off to. They loved to hear the compliments that people said about their delightfully unique little angel. This was probably one of the happiest moments my parents were ever going to share together. They really had no idea what the future held for them all that happiness was about to come to an end.
             At the time I did not know what a divorce was, but I was surely about to find out. A couple months had passed and I noticed that my parents where not acting like they normally did, you could say that they argued a little bit more then most people. By this time I would over here my mom on the phone telling her friends that her and Derrick, my dad, were arguing and she was not sure that she still wanted to stay in a relationship like that. As time went on my mom and I had moved, and we were staying at one of her close friends house. I can remember asking her, "Why can't we go back home? I am sick of staying here, I miss my room, and I want to see my dad," and all she would ever reply in a claim but collective voice was "Jessica me and your dad have problems that we have to work out; we are not getting back together, but I promise you that you will see your dad. "We had these conversations at least twice a week.
