Directing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

             If I got the chance to direct the opening scene of the play Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, I would direct it from the prologue to where Clerval drops the rucksack (from page 6 to the top of page 8). This scene starts with Captain Walton telling us that he is stuck in the Arctic Circle because the ice had closed them in. It then moves on by Captain Walton telling us that he witnessed something very unusually strange occurs. He then left the stage, and the story begins. Fankenstein, a scientist, and his friend Clerval are on top of the roof and Clerval is helping Frankenstein carrying some stuff not knowing what it is. This scene ends when Clerval drops the knapsack he was carrying for Frankenstein. While directing this play, I would mainly focus on the lighting and establishment of characters making sure that their appearance looks as realistic as possible setting them back about 100 years. I would especially focus on their costumes making sure that they tell us a little about the person (age, personality).
             If I were directing the lighting for the opening scene of this play I would start with the prologue and have Captain Walton standing in front of the curtains with a yellow-orange spotlight on his whole body. This will grab the attention of the audience and make them look at Captain Walton. When he says, " And what a strange one he was. . . . . ." the light would slowly fade as he steps behind the curtains and vanishes as he is walking behind the curtains as they are opening. By the light fading the audience will be disappointed because they are in suspense and on the edge of their seats waiting for the story to quickly begin.
             When the curtains are opened, I would have Frankenstein's room already set and put a bright white floodlight lighting the whole stage for six seconds then turn it off.
