Women in advertising

In these days feminism is an important influence in the way the media portrays images of women. It has been affected by feminists who tried to change the image of women's roles in society. In this essay I will address the feminist researchers' ideas about women in magazine advertising. For instance, women's past traditional roles in television advertisements or magazine advertisements compared to their roles today have been influenced by feminists. Thus the focus of this essay is on the contribution of women in magazine advertising as an important subject for feminists in the area of media studies. Feminism is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. Feminism as a social movement which has had an enormous impact on the media. In media studies, it is argued that there are three streams of feminist research (Zoonen, 1994). These are liberal feminism, radical feminism and socialist feminism. This essay looks at these three major types of feminism and the corresponding framework of media criticism that each one uses. Media is a very important communication tool in society. In other words, mass media has an important effect on every type of audience. Femin

Trowler's (1988) study of women in advertisements, found that women were seven times more likely to appear in personal hygiene product adverts than not to appear; 75% of all adverts using females were for products used in the bathroom or kitchen; 56% of women in adverts were shown as domestic housewives and only eighteen different occupations were shown for women, in comparison to forty three for men (Ingham, 1995). Feminist research into the mass media has shown that women tend to be shown as submissive, passive and are portrayed largely in terms of their sexuality or domesticity while men tend to be shown as dominant, active and authoritative (Baehr,1980). A person trying to be beautiful for men. Some advertisements are definitely directed at a male audience for example women's representation in car advertising. Most women's magazines include health, shopping, romance, children and society. Feminist researchers said women's place was in the home; women were dependent on men; women did not make independent and important decisions; women were shown in limited number occupational roles; women viewed themselves and were viewed by others as sex objects. These days feminism is an extremely important factor in the world. 7) Catherine Deneuve, who is a popular and beautiful actress, is in this advertisement . Sex role stereotypes, prescription of sex-appropriate behavior, appearance, interests, skills and self-perceptions are at the core of liberal feminist media analyses. Advertising is a key media tool that portrays images of women's. First, to show a greater measure of fair treatment for women and second is to be an intelligent marketing decision. Radical feminism's main point in media criticism is that the media are in the hands of the male owners and producers, and they operate for the benefit of a patriarchal society. It is an American women's magazine but it has a version in various languages in the world. Fig 1.
