             Characetr Descriptions for Capt John H Miller And Col Upham
             The character of John. H. Miller is played superbly by Tom Hanks. The character is portrayed in the film Saving Private Ryan as a veteran of war, a strong mental and physical soldier with an abundance of leadership capability and a stoic enigma to his men, but it a also seems that the years of fierce and harsh war have had its effect on the captain, as human frailty manifests itself in the form of the recurring symbol of the captain's hand shaking throughout the movie. This creates uneasiness with the soldiers under his captaincy as the sight of their veteran captain's hand trembling inputs fear into them all. These events in the movie add to the theme that Spielberg portrays beautifully, of human frailty.
             Tom Hanks' acting of Captain Miller commands much respect from his troops as well as the viewing audience as the captain seems to have an aura about him, which incites admiration.
             Jeremy Davies plays Corporal Upham extremely well. He is a reluctant translator who has never seen combat. He is the least hardened of the men, his eyes are still wide open; his sensitivity and conscience are still functioning and his fear is the most tangible. Upham's attitude and rigidness in following law where logic clearly dictates that society's laws have no place in war time and that feelings of fear, anger, retaliation and above all instinct should prevail in a god forsaken place such as the battlefield.
             Corporal Upham is looked down upon by the men in his company. His attitude as portrayed in the film is just plain cowardly, and it shows in scenes which are paramount to the film, such as the image of ammunition running out of a gatling gun, where Upham's sole job was to supply the ammo and the scene where a German soldier murders a member of Upham's company, and Upham, frozen with
