Red Room & The Signalman

In this essay I am going to compare the two stories The Red Room and The Signalman. I think that these two stories are a bit on the dull side as we are subjected to much more intense and more imaginative 'experiences' (novels, films, etc...), but they were probably some of the greatest stories of their time. Wells and Dickens are known for their linguistic way with words. Visualization is no problem as the authors use such descriptive words. The Red Room involves a young man who visits an old castle in hope of finding a ghost... Although cautioned by the three elderly inhabitants of the castle, the man chooses to proceed. "'It's of your own choosing' said the man with the withered arm once more". He travels, what seems to be a long way, down a long, dark corridor and then finally reaches the red room. The man lights candles and sets them around the room evenly to light up every inch of it. One by one the candles go out, and with every flame that vanishes, the interval, in which the next does, shortens. Whilst the candles go out, the man runs around the room trying to keep them alight. In the darkness, the man trips and is found in the morning unconscious. In contrast, The Signalman is about a man who arrives at a train stat

Repetition shown in The Signalman is not as frequent as in The Red Room, but Dickens repeats the opening line soon after a short narration of the man's thoughts. and looked out towards the red light", this shows how the signalman reacts to the ghosts' 'call'. This could be backed up as he replies to the elderly trio saying "It's my own choosing". In my opinion, I think that both stories' attempts to draw in the audience are quite successful. The echoing down the stairs startles the man and so fear (and paranoia) start to arise at this point. One of the key elements to the setting is the terrain. There are many devices that the two authors use to entice the reader, such as repetition of certain phrases or words, metaphors and similes. In my opinion, i think that the use of this line could give the narrator an untold characteristic of confidence within himself. Temperature and the time of day are the main two factors of a ghost story, so there is no doubt that they would be included to add suspense. The first quote is used to add a sense of warning to the story. In conclusion to this essay, it would seem that The Red Room engages the reader more than The Signalman, but they both do this quite well. Occasionally, the signalman would look at the bell and check the track as though it had rung. The second quote is used throughout the story to create tension and also engage the reader. "his figure was foreshortened and shadowed", this shows that there is a lack of light as there are shadows.
