setting of short story

Setting is an essential ingredient to any story orliterary work. In some however it is not only essential butit also plays a vital role in the development of the plot. In these such works it's necessary for the author to paint aclear picture and provide background of the setting. Threestories, "August 2002: Night Meeting," "The Great Gatsby,"and "The Legend of Sleep Hollow" all fit this mold. Theirauthors are Ray Bradbury, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and These three works all share some interesting qualities. All three pieces are built entirely arround their settings. Without these particular setting the plot would bemeaningless and irrelevant. Also in each, the beginning isfilled with vivid imagery that clearly paints a picture inthe readers mind. There is no question where and when eachstory is held. It is important that these three authorsleft no detail unturned, for that would throw off the rest In August 2002, the story takes place on the planet

Itfeels like you are living in 1918 and on West Egg yourself. Sinceit's futuristic we can not discredit the story but onlyimagine what it will be like in 2002. Fitzgerald is a master offplacing the reader into the characters world. This lets the reader knowthat this story is based on imagination. His settingstake on a persona of themselves and engulf the reader. The setting isimportant in "The Great Gatsby" for it enlightens us on whatkind of people we are dealing with and what the atmosphereis in general. The three works of "August 2002: A Night's Meeting,""The Great Gatsby," and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" alldepict how important a particular setting is to the successof a story. Where each differ is in the fact of how each setting playsan important role in the story. This makes the storymore believable and brings a sense of realism to it. Alsowe get a sense of a dark and gloomy mood because of theforests and surrounding scenery that Irving so brilliantlyuses. Thisis important because of the eerie mood that Sleepy Hollowtakes on. First off we have the futuristic, Mars setting createdby Bradbury. We know that there are many rich snobs inthis neighborhood and also that it takes place in early 1900where there was an economic high right before the GreatDepression. The storyline, crossing two paralleldimensions, seems unrealistic but because of the setting itcomes across as interesting and intriguing as opposed tofalse and not believable. You must be able to feel the trees watching you,the wind blowing and hear the sound of the horse tocompletely understand how Ichabad felt.
