Children should not be discriminated against because they are handicapped or have a learning disorder. The law states that all children have the right to attend public school and get the help and attention that they need in order to successfully complete school. The purpose of this paper is to educate the reader about the developmental problems associated with the disorder known as autism and the problems children face in school. Autism is a developmental disorder that causes a child to be unable to communicate with others in a normal way. According to Leo Kanner, (1943) autistic people are limited to their need for a predictable routine, and by the inability to learn normal speech. Kanner believes that this type of developmental disorder is rare and a more common disorder that is often mistaken for autism is Asperger syndrome. Asperger syndrome is a disorder where children can master verbal skills, but has problems with social perceptions and skills. Research has shown that autistic children learn better if the teacher presents the material to the child in an organized fashion. The teacher should be consistent with the rules and not change the rules on the child. No person with autism should be inappropriately denied access to meaningful educational activities. If a child is expected to perform several tasks at school in order to do their work they get upset because they can not understand how to do the task because it is to complex for the child.
