Heart of darkness
Joseph Conrad writes in his novel The Heart of Darkness, the quote "the mind of a man is capable of anything- because everything is in it, all the past as well as the future (106)". This quote best describes the relationship between his characters of Marlow and Kurtz. Within this quote, we see how something as powerful as the human mind is easily susceptible to manipulation. Throughout the story, we are given many examples that compare and contrast the characters of Marlow and Kurtz throughout their journeys into the darkness. Together, both characters show us a vivid example of the past as well as the future, and we see this through the power and corruption of the human mind. The novel focuses primarily on the characters of Marlow and Kurtz. The similarities and differences between each character have a "light and dark" effect to them. For example, Kurtz is a man of many identities that are both of good and bad nature. Kurtz, a highly educated man who aspired to become a writer and musician, becomes the representation of all things evil. Kurtz became living proof to Marlow that although the world at times seems horrific, the darkness must be embraced and accepted and in no way be allowed to take over a man's life. I believe it is much easier to envision the relationship that Marlow has with Kurtz because we can never truly understand the feelings Kurtz has for Marlow. "I was seduced into something like admiration- like envy (129). The role each character plays throughout the novel is an important part of understanding how they relate to a larger significance. We never really see Kurtz's feelings towards Marlow, but the closest we get to understanding Marlow most definitely comes through his interactions with Kurtz. Marlow came to terms with accepting to live with the darkness that exists in the world. In our lecture readings, we better understood how Marlow became caught up in figuring out how someone as "brilliant and successful (and idealistic) as Kurtz could become so twisted (lecture)". Each of them shared their descent and failure in to the darkness, but each prevailed with a greater consciousness of life as well as death. The characters learn to live through what they both feel deep within their heart, and by doing so they seek to question what the real "truth" is. Marlow, however, is motivated solely by the curiosity of Kurtz. This contrasts the characters of Marlow and Kurtz while at the same time showing the remarkable tendencies that each of them shared through life and through death. The characters of Marlow and Kurtz are both extraordinary in their own distinct ways. The characters of Marlow and Kurtz are the best examples of the past and future, and each gave us the true meaning of the greater significance of life. Every human being has their own darkness as well as their own way of indulging in it.
