Theodoric of the Ostrogoths
Theodoric the Great was the king of the Ostrogoths. Born in 454 in the Roman province of Pannonia as the son of Theodemir the Amal. He was held as a political hostage in the Roman court at Constantinople from age seven through to age seventeen. There he was educated in the roman way of life and law. Theodoric also learned that the Roman Empire could offer his people many things. After securing leadership of the Ostrogoths in 471 Theodoric was forced to defend his crown against Theodoric Strabo. With the death of Theodoric Strabo in 481, the current emperor Zeno recognised Theodoric as king of the Ostrogoths and in 483 appointed him master of the soldiers and in 484 Consul-designate. In 488 Zeno commissioned Theodoric to take his people and expel the western roman emperor Odovacar. After several years of war Theodoric was able to murder Odovacar. Theodoric then pronounced the Ostrogothic kingdom of Italy. Theodoric's rule was recognised in 497 when the eastern emperor Anastasius I sent Theodoric the royal insignia. The failure of Theodoric's army to arrive started a war between the two Kingdoms which lasted until 511 with Theodoric defeating the Visigoths and proclaimed himself King. By offering his soldiers the chance to be free men Theodoric created a large successful fighting unit. In all Theodoric was successful as a leader by not causing overt difficulties between the two peoples by forcing the separation. The other prominent group that was left on the border was the Breoni that lived in the Tirolian Alps. Theodoric was a man who understood personal freedom especially in the domain of religion, was master of politics and understood the social structure of society. He was able to keep a united group under his rule and by garrisoning the soldiers and keeping them along the borders he created a successful line of defence and in effect solved two problems with a single solution showing that he was a successful leader. There was no attempt to integrate them into the army. Through his social policies Theodoric improved the living conditions in Italy proving that he was a successful ruler. The idea was to create a balance of Romans and Goths in the Imperial structure and to have a Roman representative to deal with the Romans and an Ostrogothic representative deal with the Ostrogoths. An empire that contained many different ethnic groups and had many different enemies along its borders.
