They speculate that Tea Cake left her for a younger woman and took the money she inherited from Jody Starks, her deceased husband. The laborers' attitude toward the Seminoles' prediction of the hurricane again shows Hurston's grasp of racism and cultural biases. Nanny coerced Janie into marrying him because she valued financial security and respectability over love. Pheoby resolves to make a few changes in her relationship with her own husband, Sam Watson.
