Learned Lessons

             Throughout our lives, we have come to meet many people and problems that have helped us gain experience and changed the way we think. Some lessons are learned through trials and tribulations; some are learned through experience. No matter how we've learned our lessons, they will stay with us forever, and help us through life. All lessons are important in some way, but what lessons are the most important? In my opinion, the most important lessons in life are ones that will help us become a better person on the inside, and understand how to relieve pain. This is shown in the novel Cry, the Beloved Country. On his journey to reunite his family and rebuild the tribe, Stephen Kumalo learns many important lessons from the characters that he encounters. The most important of these lessons are that changes for the better are worth the sacrifice, tolerance for others will bridge gaps between two sides, and forgiveness ends all pain. All three qualities would in a time of danger, make a person we would call "hero", but why are these lessons so important?
             First of all, we have to understand that in order to accomplish anything in life, we have to make sacrifices. These sacrifices can be as small as a moment of time, or a big as power and status. Every sacrifice amounts to something. Stephen Kumalo has learned that from the characters he has met. The knowledge that every sacrifice amounts to something helps Kumalo have hope that the world can change someday because there are people that care. For example, a white is stopped by the police for carrying black passengers. The white man dares the police to take him to court. His defying of the police puts himself at a personal risk. His defying of the police may also raise questions as to whether or not the white people are doing the right thing with the apartheid system.
