The Color of Water & The BPP

Throughout the book, The Color of Water, James McBride made many references todifferent organizations bent on black power. He explained in minor detail how theywalked through the streets and intimidated others, especially him. The best known, andprobably the most powerful, of the organizations was the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party was founded in 1966, immediately after the death of Malcolm X.Huey P. Newton gathered together 5 of his long-time friends and started The Party. Theseinseparable started the real fight of black power, but in a different way than that of theother groups. The majority of these black supremacists, at the time, simply walked aroundtheir area of town, equipped with a shotgun over their shoulder, which was surprisinglylegal at the time. The Panthers were different. They attacked racism with people. Theoriginal six men made the Ten-Point Program, a code for the panthers to live by.This list helped the panthers to sustain communities as their life style dwindled. Theydeveloped many other programs to do so as well. These programs were built onconnections that one of two panthers had made to support the common good. Theyemployed storekeeper panthers to start up a free

We believe that if the landlords will not give decent housing to our Black and oppressedcommunities, then housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that thepeople in our communities, with government aid, can build and make decent housing forthe people. WE WANT POWER TO DETERMINE THE DESTINYOF OUR BLACK AND OPPRESSED COMMUNITIES. They strived for everything that the black personneeded to get along in life. However, no matter how well they could fight, if they needed to be brought down, they were. Catchy slogans, like"Cleaver for President," (Cleaver was one of The Party leaders) encouraged revolt. Webelieve that when persons are brought to trial they must be guaranteed, by the UnitedStates, juries of their peers, attorneys of their choice and freedom from imprisonmentwhile awaiting trial. They carried many camerasand law books, making sure that the law was dealt correctly. According to Huey Newton, all of the panthers must have been crazy, asonly crazy people can survive shootouts with the police. WE WANT AN END TO THE ROBBERY BY THE CAPITALISTS OF OURBLACK AND OPPRESSED COMMUNITIES. Their effortsmay have been considered futile, seeing as how they never got the laws changed in theirfavor, but they did do something. Next in line came the Clothing andShoe Programs. WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE END TO POLICE BRUTALITY AND MURDEROF BLACK PEOPLE, OTHER PEOPLE OF COLOR, All OPPRESSED PEOPLEINSIDE THE UNITED STATES. WE WANT LAND, BREAD, HOUSING, EDUCATION, CLOTHING, JUSTICE,PEACE AND PEOPLE'S COMMUNITY CONTROL OF MODERNTECHNOLOGY. After the election, thiswasn't a smart move. We believe in the ultimateelimination of all wretched, inhuman penal institutions, because the masses of men andwomen imprisoned inside the United States or by the United States military are thevictims of oppressive conditions which are the real cause of their imprisonment.
