The Matrix Movie
There are many movies and television shows that have dealt with the issue of conflict between machines and humans. Some examples that come to mind are Terminator, and Star Trek (the Borg Collective) but one movie that stands out in my mind is Matrix. The Matrix is a movie about machines that have supposedly taken over humans and confined them in a computer program that creates reality for them. This confine is known as the Matrix. The beginning of Matrix begins like most science fiction movies, providing us with more questions and answers. It is these questions that caused me to stay on the edge of my seat the first time I saw the movie two years ago and when I recently saw Matrix for the movie review. The mystery or suspense (important in science fiction) in the plot begins when Trinity (a female) is trapped in a building but escapes through a telephone. Events like the one just mentioned continue to occur. For instance, the typing on the screen asking Neo (the main character) to follow the white rabbit was a way of creating that sense of a wonderland feeling according to the director. He wanted us to understand the confusion that must have been felt by Neo when he was confronted
The cause or creation of the Matrix is the work of the machines. But ironically, they slowly took over and ended up controlling humans by enslaving them in a world where mankind reached their pinnacle civilization. He is an optimist and help but to believe what he believes which is that a chosen one (Neo) will free humans from the Matrix. Another similarity is the unknown, and how some people want to no more and break away from the mesmerizing hold the overlords have on the humans. As I mentioned before, the machines had created this world and enslaved humans to it. There are cute references that link Alice in Wonderland to this theme, including the follow the white rabbit connection. He thinks fate offers no control and finds it hard to believe in Morpheus when he first taken from the Matrix and introduced to the world he has really been living in. So far I have mentioned the themes that were so apparent when watching the movie but there were others that helped move the plot right along such as Neo and his skepticism of fate. The other main themes in the film were artificial intelligence and the man/machine relationship. He is a person that believes in something or someone in this case, so much so that he will do anything to make it come true. Humans originally controlled the machines that created the Matrix. In the movie it is treated as a glitch. Cypher ends up betraying Morpheus, which ends up in Morpheus' capture by the agents.
