Sexual harassment

"Ryan Thomas, a former boyfriend, grabbed Kim Henderson, a college student at North Carolina State University on her backside while on her way to class. Kim turned around immediately and told him to back off. Surprised by her reaction, he looked at her and asked, 'Why are you being so up tight?' She considered what Ryan did to be sexual harassment and was not amused by it. Although Ryan did not consider what he did to be sexual harassment, Kim did."(online source) This may not be an extreme case of sexual harassment, but it is harassment. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines sexual harassment as "uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct directed at a person because of his or her sex." Sexual harassment cases are very high among college students, for whatever reason that may be. Did you know that every six minutes a woman is raped? The statistics are outstanding. In Sexual Harassment on College Campuses: Abusing the Ivory Power, Michele A. Paludi states that "College campuses have the highest rate of sexual harassment than anywhere else, including high schools and workplace areas." Shockingly, I find this to be true. And I believe that this problem needs to be stopped immediately. It end

If people see that this is a serious matter, than they will think twice about it. It should be taken seriously for the crime that it is. The students need to be prepared for what they are going to face in one or two years. the evidence suggests that the [decline in] reports of sexual harassment of women students by University faculty and staff represents a real change in the behavior of University employees, and this change most likely occurred in response to the University's sexual harassment policy and grievance procedure" (p. p3 The last step is to have an accessible grievance procedure. College students are made more aware of harassment, because it can affect them more. In another interview with a female college freshman Natalie Gonzalez, she stated that, "You have to be careful out there. angers the safety of the students, and makes people live in fear. Any kind of unwanted verbal or physical abuse conducted because of a person's sex is to be considered as sexual harassment. People should have a good understanding of sexual harassment, and know what it is and how to prevent it. Having a set place for them can be very beneficial. And most important, know that there is somewhere for you to turn if you need to. " This just shows the difference of being in high school and in college. How is a person supposed to know what they're doing is wrong, if they don't even know what is wrong? Well having a universal definition of sexual harassment can help correct that problem.
