The Faith of Brown

             In Nathaniel Hawthrone's "Young Goodman Brown" Brown is the main character who go against his christian faith. The story is moral and is deep with allegory. There are many symbols throughout "Brown" that shed lights into the story. Each symbol is profound, and helps the reader to understand the real meaning of the story.
             The first thing the reader notices is the where the story take place which is in Salem. This town gives the story the evil setting. In the story we meet Faith, Brown's wife "My Love and my Faith"(187). When he say this he is talking to his wife, but Brown is also talking about his doubtful faith in God. From Faith, we notice that she has pink ribbons on her cap. The ribbons represent purity and innocence and , a carefree attitude to life. He tells Faith that he has to take a journey into the forest, which represent temptation and evil.
             He goes to the forest and meets a fellow traveler who is carrying a staff that "bore the likeness of a great black snake"(188). This is the clue that the man is the devil. He notices that "still they might have been taken for father and son"(188). This symbolize how Brown is compared to the satan. He doubt his faith in God to meet evil. What does this say about his Christian faith? The devil tries to get Brown to leave his christian way of life to sin by offering his staff. This makes brown more aware of his faith, and that he wants to remain a good man no matter what his ancestor have done in the past. While in the woods Brown takes a maple branch off as he walks along with the devil. "The moment his fingers touched the them, they became strangely withered and dried up, as with a weeks sunshine" (190). This shows how weak and just how rotten Brown is has became. Browns sees his mentors including Cloyse and Gookin who represents the basics in his christian faith. Brown also passes his wife, which then he screams out "My Faith is gone! There is no good o
