The Five People You Meet in Heaven compared toThe Alchemist

In The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, a young Spanish shepherd boy named Santiago has a recurrent dream about a treasure by the pyramids in Egypt. He follows this dream to the pyramids, only to learn that the treasure was actually under the church in which he often slept, back in the fields of Spain. The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom, tells of Mitch's uncle Eddie's death, and then describes his journey through the afterlife. There are not many similarities in the actual stories

The Five People You Meet in Heaven tells of the author's deceased uncle, Eddie, and how he meets five people whose life he affected, or who affected him, when he gets to Heaven. The Alchemist surrounds Santiago, and his journey across the fields of Spain to the deserts of Africa, all the way to the pyramids in Egypt. Both deal with life, and the little things that happen that end up having an immense effect later on. On the other hand, there were differences between the books. Also, both follow one central character as he begins his journey through life (although Eddie is beginning his afterlife). Furthermore, by the end of the novel, each character has reached his goal set in the beginning - Santiago found his treasure, Eddie finished his first journey through the afterlife, and realized why he was there. Although both The Alchemist and The Five People You Meet in Heaven deal with life and things that happen in life, they have their differences. told by the novels, but the theme and way in which they were written are alike. Also, Santiago achieves his Personal Legend - a hidden treasure and a girl; but Eddie learns his purpose and mission in Heaven. One takes place during a young shepherd boy's life, in search of his Personal Legend; and the other takes place in a deceased old man's afterlife, in search of a purpose in Heaven.
