Pink Christmas Tree

My birthday is December 7, and almost every year we would go to Salt Lake for my birthday. My mom’s family had a reunion around that time, and it was usually the weekend of the Festival of Trees. The Festival of Trees is a charity event for Primary Children’s Hospital where people decorate trees and then auction them off giving the money to the hospital. When I was in third grade, we went as a big extended family to see the Festival of Trees. I remember the anticipation I felt going into the Salt Palace, holding my Grandmother’s hand, walking through the entrance guarded by giant nutcrackers. Everyone had been telling me all day how much I would enjoy the Festival of Trees and I felt the excitement in my stomach. When we finally made it inside the huge convention center, we saw the most beautiful trees. I was entranced with how many different trees there were, and how beautifully they were decorated. I had such a desire to make something that beautiful, and asked my mom if we could decorate a tree the next year to donate to the festival ourselves. She told me that it was too far (it was 3 hours away) for us to do a tree, but that the next year I could decide how we would decorate our tree for our home. What a huge task laid

. . .

I look forward to it, not only because I think it is so beautiful, but also because it is a symbol of my parent’s faith in me. I also see now especially how willing my parents were to support my creativity. My parents also enjoyed the tree, although it was guaranteed that we would never make a pink tree again. My mom seemed a little surprised that I had been so detail oriented, let alone remembered our agreement. I was an imaginative child, and very particular. We visited my Dad’s Mom for Thanksgiving in Casper. My parents ended up just brushing the flocking onto the tree with their own recipe, as they decided that the gun was useless.

Our Christmas tree that year looked incredibly beautiful. This year will be the second year that I put it up. We had not yet put up the tree, because we always waited until after my birthday, as to preserve the magic of my birthday instead of it blending in with Christmas. When my Mom came to visit for my birthday, yes still making it special after 24 years, she bought me the tree for my birthday. One day out of the blue, I told her that I had been contemplating the big Christmas Tree decision and finally came to a conclusion. I remember the anticipation that night; it was almost as bad as waiting for Santa Clause. I finally had decided that we would have a pink tree, pink being my favorite color, decorated with iridescent ornaments.
