             What contrasting views and images of Australia have you found in the poetry that you have read this year?
             Australian poetry portrays many contrasting views and images of Australia. Through the poetry that has been studied this year, I have found that various aspects of Australia are displayed through a range of poems. Australian poets such as Dorethea Mackellar, Judith Wright, and Bruce Dawe all show their outlook of Australia through their poetry. Their poetry is especially appealing because of their vividness and their use of imagery. In the following essay, I will discuss how these poets have portrayed their views and images of Australia through the power of language.
             Dorethea Mackellar has illustrated her views of Australia through the poem, "My Country". The poem is about a person who has moved to Australia from England. The basis of the poem is the beauty of Australia and the love the person has for it. The use of effective imagery throughout the poem creates the overall appeal of the poem, which causes the reader to visualise the "filmy veil of greenness". Mackellar's poem is six stanzas long, written in descriptive and specific language that easily conveys her views. Using metaphors such as, "sapphire-misted mountains" and "jewel-sea", Mackellar makes her readers feel the elegance and seductiveness of Australia, "a sunburnt country".
             Judith Wright conveys her appreciation of the Australian beach in "The Surfer". This poem is about a male surfer who finds his love and happiness in the ocean – the ocean is his second home. As the "last leaf of gold vanishes from the sea-curve", the surfer turns to shore - back to the elegance of Australia.
