Rocking Horse Winner

             "The Rocking-Horse Winner" by D.H. Lawrence is a story about conflicts between Paul and his mother using different forms of secrecy. Paul's character is defined through the use of these secrets. By understanding the secrets between his mother, his rocking horse, and Uncle Oscar can you really understand his struggle to receive love from his mother. Paul's character, throughout the story struggles with the secrets that him and his mother are keeping and love the he wants to receive from his mother.
             Paul's relationship with his mother and the secrets they keep from each other are what leads to unpleasant life. The consist echoing throughout the house's walls
             'there must be more money" (874). Paul takes it upon himself the intolerable burden of attempting to solve his mother's problem....the lack of money. He takes this challenge hoping to receive his mother's love in return. It's Paul's secrets that add conflict in the story because the secrets separate him which eventually lead him to his death.
             Paul's secret with his rocking horse is really symbolism. His rocking horse was a gift from his parents. While riding the horse a voice will sometimes magically whisper the next week's winner in the upcoming horse races. "He would sit on his rocking horse, charging madly into space" (875). Without his mother knowing, Paul will ask the young gardener, Bassett, to place bets on the horse races behind her back. "He always talks about horse races with Bassett." (876)
             Paul's uncle was probably his favorite because the Uncle took him to horse races and most of all showed him attention. You can come to this conclusion because Paul told him his secret about the betting on the horse races. "But it's between you and me, Uncle Oscar!"(877) "He had never been to a race meeting before.
