Marco Polo

             Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta were two travelers who traveled long and challenging distances to trade, explore, and record the differences of eastern countries. It is evident from the recordings, these men were very observant and interested in the discovery of other society practices. Three salient issues discussed in the travels or Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta are the structure of society, the treatment of women, and the habits, beliefs, rituals and practices of other societies.
             According to Marco Polo, one society that was an influential society in which many differences existed was the Tarter society. He clearly describes various habits and beliefs that exited in the society. For example, Marco Polo explains how kings of the society were elected and how wandering from place to place was a common practice for the Tarters. Another example of his discoveries was the Tarter tradition of death. He clearly describes their customs as "being impressed with the belief that all whom they thus slay do actually become his servants in the next life." Traditions surrounding death, leadership elections and wandering practices were all recorded by Marco Polo from the Tarter society. Other examples of his findings were that of their society structure.
             In the Travels of Marco Polo, he clearly describes the differences women had in the Tarter society. Marco Polo also described the qualities of the Tarter women. He describes the women as women who "are not excelled in the world for chastity and decency for conduct, nor for love and duty of their husbands." It is interesting that Marco Polo described the social status of women because having information on other societies can enormously influence other cultures and practices.
