Youths Having It Harder Than Suspected Nanette Davis challenges the myth that today' s youth have it easy in her chapter titled " Youth in At-Risk society." Davis shows that being a youth today is much more difficult than the imaginable. Youth have to go through numerous obstacles in their daily lives regardless of the benefits and commodities that youth today are blessed with. They are faced with drugs, violence, pressure, and other challenges such as being successful. Many young people in this day and age are trying to look, act, and overall seem older. Youths face many dilemmas in their journey to adulthood, yet they still try to obtain adulthood earlier by going through the proper rites of passage. These rites create dilemmas which can help or trigger lifetime goals. Two of the dilemmas that young people face today are peer pressure, and adult pressure. Youth encounter some of the many rites of passage in modern society; such as : smoking, drinking, and violence. Peer pressure is a very major dilemma in that friends or peers try to get a person to do what they, the majority, like and not what the individual likes. The style of clothes one wears is also a big disagreement among the two groups. Another challenge teens encounter when reaching the stage of adulthood is drugs and alcohol. In addition, society imposes a more difficult grading systems, and yet their expectations of a successful youth still remains. The pressures of peers, adults, and society are often conflicting. Adults also create self-esteem problems in teens by not respecting choices or decisions made by teens. In a way adult pressure is worse than peer pressure. Adult pressure is by far the worst creating many problems with youths today. They make things harder in that adults pressure teens into colleges, jobs, careers, and life over all. Being a youth today, you are constantly pressured to be somebody of high rank; however, there are many factors that delay or at times even yield you from becoming what is expected of you to become. A college degree is now required simply to live a reasonable life. Drugs, Sex, and alcohol are some of the many things peers and adults disagree upon. Sometimes neither are good, and other times all are good. Being a youth today is an easy task, being a successful youth however in modern times is becoming more difficult than before. Adults create many dilemmas in a teens life.
