Dramatic Irony in a Dolls Hous
Irony serves the purpose of accentuating a story, it also addsto its creativity and originality. There are numerous types ofirony in the play A Doll's House by Henrik Isben. Throughoutthis work three types of irony are used, dramatic, situational,and verbal. These three types of irony help bring out certainconflicts within the play. These Conflicts, without irony,wouldn't provide readers with such enjoyable or dazzling playsDramatic Irony, defined by Websters Dictionary, is theincongruity between a situation developed in a drama and theaccompanying words or actions that is understood by the audiencebut not by the characters in the play A Doll's House containsabundant examples of dramatic irony. In A Doll's House thereader is aware that Nora borrowed money from Krogstad withouther husband's permission. Nora also forged her father's name togain the money. She says, "You don't
Nora then gets up and, "Shuts the doorof the stove and moves the rocking-chair aside. Nora has her share of verbal irony too. Without irony, literature, especially playswould be humdrum and minimal. Linde, says, "Nils,how would it be if we two shipwrecked people could join forces?"The reader finds out that Christine and Krogstad compel eachother. "In the following conversation between Nora and Christine it isclearly stated that Torvald does not know of Nora's actions:"Mrs. Only till Nora says, "Or if anythingelse should happen to me-anything, for instance, that mightprevent me from being here-" the reader gets a feeling that Noramight leave Torvald.
