A River Runs Through It

             Norman and Pauls relationship is one that is unique and has many hidden feelings. They can look at each other and without saying a word, know what the other is thinking. The friendship between these two is so strong and can withstand anything that tries to disturb it. Each boy had a different relationship with the father, Norman, as an obedient son, and Paul, who tested the limits with his father as much as he possibly could. The boys relationship changed with the times, and Paul's life style had set his destiny. Their lives were greatly fulfilled, and it is a shame that Paul's had to end.
             Growing up, Norman and Paul were the best of friends. If one lacked a quality, the other picked up the slack, they complimented each other. Norman was a good fisherman, he did what his father had taught him, and he caught fish. Paul on the other hand, "he had those extra things besides fine training-genius, luck, and plenty of self-confidence." Paul went the extra mile when he was doing things, he figured out his own way to fish called shadow casting. Paul was one to set the example, not follow. He made up his rules. Even though there was a three year age difference between the boys, Norman never acted like an older brother, he treated Paul with the same respect as he got. When they got older and went their separate ways, they never really lost touch. The times they would come home, it was as if nothing had changed. These two did not need time together to keep their relationship strong, they did not need anything. Their relationship stayed strong, even without communication. When Paul was talking about Neil, he said, "maybe what he likes is somebody trying to help him." That seems to be a reference not only to Neil but one that Paul was hinting to his brother that he liked about him. Time only made these two closer and never had they had friends as close as each oth
