Does media violence hurt?

             "Television is a casual factor behind approximately one half of the homicides committed in the United States, according to Epidemiologist B.S. Centerwall, writing in the journal of the American Medical Association." (Levine) So, does media violence hurt? And if so who does it hurt? Media violence does hurt and it hurts the children. Media violence affects children of all ages but in different ways.
             During the ages of 3, 4, and 5 there is the cartoon Dilemma. At this age children begin to watch cartoons, they learn about superheroes who have powers and are always using violence to solve problems. This is teaching the young children that violence is an effective way to solve the problems of the world. For example take the popular cartoon X-men, Pokemon, and Digimon all of these cartoons use some form of violence. Children copy what they see. ". . . children learn to be aggressive by observing and imitating other people who are acting aggressively." (Levine) These cartoons are damaging the young children, they begin to believe that violence is the way to solve their problems. "There is a large body of research focusing on the effects of media violence on preschool-age children. Almost without exception this research has found that viewing violence makes children more aggressive, more restless, more fearful, and less creative."(Levine p.101) These traits grow with the child, the things they learn in these years will affect them through their lives.
             Children that are of the age of 6, 7, and 8 are considered to be apart of "middle age childhood". In this stage children still are affected by what they see on TV. Children still imitate cartoon characters and then when they are told this behavior in inappropriate they don't understand how.
