The Horror - Heart of Darkness

Many times in a novel there is a line that is most memorable. This line sticks outmore than all the rest. It possesses a certain amount of excitement and intrigue with whichthe reader can relate. This line can usually be found in other books, casual conversation,movies, and other medias. The line is used over and over again and it becomes a part ofhistory and life. People recognize the line without even knowing the origin of the line orthe historical and literary meaning behind the line. The Heart of Darkness possesses oneof these unforgettable lines. The line is found at the end of the book and expresses thechange in a character's mental health. This line results in a change in the meaning and Kurtz had originally ventured into "the jungle" to help the backward races. Hewas moved though, by the eternal forces of power and security. Kurtz's intentions began


Kurtz hadbeen claimed by the powers of darkness. Kurtz is no longer the insane and evil man he had become throughthe extreme isolation and savagery he had encountered since entering "the jungle. "The horror! The horror!" Kurtz's final words and his final judgment. The words warn people against the impulse of men to bring pity, science, andprogress to backward races. He showsus that once again he has reached sanity and that he feels remorse for all the horriblethings he has done throughout his life. They warn people against the evils of darkness andisolation. He judgedwho and what he had become. Kurtz has realized all the evil and immoral events that he hasbeen through in his lifetime. Butthe four words scrawled at the end of these pages revealed his true impulses in short: "Exterminate all the brutes!" Kurtz ended up reverting to savagery himself. Heknows that the way he lived his life was wrong and that he wasted the lives of many othersalong the way. Kurtz has finally realized that he is evil. This line also makes one realize that Kurtz has regained hissanity before his death. Kurtz realizes that the things that have taken place in "the jungle" arewrong.
