Beloved

The idea of the self in Toni Morrison's book Beloved combines three central themes. The way an individual speaks has a direct correlation to the environment they are in. An identity cannot be defined without there being other people to anchor it. And, the self is not only limited to a single individual but can expand to multiple persons. Beloved is a complex novel that depicts the concept of the self unbounded by western thought. Human language developed with civilization. Language has created accents, meaning and vocabulary. Learning any language, vocabulary and accent is heavily reliant on the location of the speaker. When language is developed within society words have a culturally-derived meaning. There is symbolism to suggest that Beloved is the incarnation of all African lives lost during the Middle Passage. The Bodwins helped freed slaves only to give them a paid slavery. Garner owned Sweet Home and believed in institutional slavery. By giving Sethe a job the Bodwins ensured there was a way for them to get paid. Taking the same approach Toni Morrison defines identity by environment. There is also information to suggest that Beloved is the incarnation of Sethe's dead child. The most encompassing character in the novel is Beloved. Garner created for the slaves on Sweet Home would reflect into his true identity. The Bodwins still believed there was money to gain from black people and that they were still objects. Actively fighting abolitionists, the Bodwins fought for the end of slavery. Sethe defines herself with her children and thus tries to save parts of herself from slavery. The first example is Sethe and her children.
