The bean trees
In The Bean Trees there are lots of themes that add up to a well-made story. One of the more obvious themes is that of immigration and the Underground Railroad that Mattie helps run. Within the book there are also several references to child abuse. Another is that of Teen pregnancy that is introduced early on. This however is not all of the themes that are used, but they are some of the more prominent and reoccurring ones in the novel. One of the themes is teen pregnancy, it however is primarily only talked about it the first chapter. This is one of the greatest driving forces for getting Taylor out of Kentucky. Taylor starts in a society where the many of the girls in her school and town become pregnant at a young age. This all but impresses Taylor and motivates her to become someone better than all the pregnant girls of her town. It motivates her even more when Newt Hardbine and Jolene Shanks arrive at the hospital. Newt had been shot by his father and furthermore Jolene had also been shot at while she was carrying a baby. As this reality dawns on her it grips to her soul and immediately changes the way she views the world. This turn of events has a great impact on her future. I think her decision to
An abused child soon after calls on her in desperate need. Almost without think about it she accepts the role as mother to the child that has been placed in her care. When she was given to Taylor she had several bruises on her body. After getting into her car an old Cherokee woman that she had seen earlier in the diner comes over to the car. Refusing to become pregnant as a teen, Taylor leaves town young just so she can get out before it's to late. Later on in the story Taylor gets Turtle to begin speaking. After learning about Estevan and Esperanza, Taylor begins distaste for the US policies on refugees and immigration. However it turns out that those very same people that she helps end up helping her to adopt the child that she was left with. During this time Taylor has made other friends, one of witch is Mattie. Soon there after, Turtle starts to quiet down again. Taylor doesn't take a very active part in the Underground Railroad and doesn't have much knowledge of its workings. Had it not been for Taylor's good deeds and involvement in the Underground Railroad she may have not been able to keep Turtle. This sort of behavior is common among young victims of abuse. Because they are in Oklahoma, the final destination for Estevan and Esperanza, they pass through the "Cherokee Nation". Later because of these bruises it is speculated that Turtle might have been abused physically and perhaps sexually as well.
