Smoking

             The smoking of pipes, cigars and cigarettes should be banned. Discuss.
             I do not agree with the statement that argues that "Smoking of pipes, cigars and cigarettes should be banned" up to a certain extent, as I personally do not see things in black or white. On the contrary, I truly believe that general issues should be viewed in different shades of grey to be able to take into account different perspectives.
             As everyone knows, smoking is a terrible health hazard that causes lifelong smokers to die much earlier than men who have never smoked. Moreover, it may be the cause of very serious diseases such as coronary artery disease, several kinds of cancer -especially lung cancer- and chronic bronchitis, among others. As an example of this, it is relevant to mention the fact that 110.000 people die yearly in the United Kingdom only as a result of smoking. Evidently, the health risks attached to smoking enormously outweigh the enjoyment that people get from smoking.
             Also, smoking is a very expensive habit to have. Come to think of it, smokers are spending their money on something that is a risk to their health. It is a fact that if they gave up smoking, they could save a substantial amount of money and reduce the possibilities of having health problems.
             In addition, it is a fact that smoking also affects non-smokers. It is known that non-smokers who are exposed to tobacco become passive smokers who are also affected by this habit. Therefore, smokers are not only endangering themselves by smoking but they are also risking the lives of others. As a general rule, smokers should consider that the freedom of every individual ends where the freedom of the another starts. Consequently, smokers should have the right to choose what to do with their own health but, on the other hand, they should respect non-smokers.
