Journeys -Peter poems

What have you come to learn about Physical Journeys? From my studies of physical journeys I can deduce that a physical journey is not just one that involves getting a traveller from one place to another. Physical journeys encompass a number of different issues including the mystery and uncertainty about life after the journey, obstacles and barriers to overcome, the psychological and mental state of the traveller, reasons for the journey and also issues about self identity and knowledge. The texts that best describe these issues include: 2 poems by Peter Skrzynecki- 'Crossing the Red Sea' and 'Migrant Hostel.' These are poems from his book 'Immigrant Chronicle' which focuses on difficulties faced by migrants in Australian society. 'Journey to the land and sea' is an extract from the Smithsonian Library which details the effects of a physical journey. A documentary aired on the ABC on Australian Story: 'On the Mountain' tells the story of Victoria Friend who has had a life changing experience after embarking on a physical journey. And finally an article from an adoption internet site called 'Journey of Self-Discovery' by Alexis Tompkins-Larrance shows that a physical journey can lead to self discovery.

They crashed and then had to wait 40 hours until someone found them. Skrzynecki uses daybreak to symbolise the migrant's futures, which is viewed in quite a positive way. It states quite clearly the consequences of a physical journey in history. In her eyes, she was not the 'American dream' so therefore she disowned her culture and identity. The last stanza talks about the actual physical gates of the hostel, which holds them in, keeping them away from the outside world. Through imagery we can see the vulnerability felt by the migrants with examples such as "shirtless", "unshaven faces", "trembling voices" (aural imagery) and "sunken eyes". ea focuses on the physical journey of exiles, leaving their old lives travelling, by boat, towards new land, full of hope and promise. "Unaware of the season whose track we would follow. It is written in free verse so it is therefore very accessible to the audience. Migrant hostel is a transitionary stage in the migrants physical journey. Her mum uses abstract nouns like courage and strength to describe Friend and therefore we side with her from the start. "to watch a sunset they would never see again-" This line is very effective in portraying to the audience, what the migrants are feeling, their mental state. It is very informal, it is just Victoria Friend, and her relatives and friends telling the story and by the end of it we very much sympathise with Victoria Friend. Afterwards she went into a state of depression, confiding in her friends, saying that she didn't want to live, so her friends were uncertain about her future. To sum up my understanding of a physical journey, I believe that physical journeys are an opportunity for travellers to learn about themselves and the world around them by responding to challenges and obstacles faced whilst and after the journey is taken.
