Rosenbergs
THE ROSENBERG CASE Declared the "espionage trial of the century", Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were accused, convicted, and executed on the basis that they passed the secrets of the Atomic Bomb to theSoviets (Okun pg5). Their execution took place on June 19, 1953 in New York's Sing SingPrison by way of the electric chair( pg5). Their conviction and immediate death sentence sparkedcontroversy and division among the people of America and the people of the world (pg6).Although some believed the Rosenbergs were true war enemies, most people believed they wereused as scapegoats for Cold War paranoia which questioned the governments role in securing the There were three defendants, including Julius Rosenberg, Ethel Rosenberg, and MortonSobell (Radosh pg 13). Julius Rosenberg was born on May 12, 1918 in New York City (pg23).He was the son of Polish immigrants who worked the labor and assembly lines of factories (pg23).Although his father desired Julius to become a rabbi, Julius enrolled at a city college in New Yorkto study electrical engineering (pg23). While in college Julius pursued his other interest, politics.Joining the Steinmetz Club and Young Communis
Theconclusion that the Rosenberg's case was illegal is based on the examination of what the lawstated on June 19, 1953 (Radosh pg 78-80). Douglas wasisolated from his colleagues because of his differing opinions regarding the Rosenbergs (pg57). Every judge who reviewed the Rosenberg casebefore it reached the Supreme Court readily assumed the Rosenberg's were charged tried andconvicted under approved law (pg85). The case is the most disturbing single experience I have had during my termsof service on the court (Tornburn pg 15). When these issues came to the attention of Justice Douglas of the Supreme Court, JusticeDouglas ruled that the 1946 Act did apply and thus the sentences were illegal (Meeropol pg27). In Orange County, Newport Beach, and CDM, the same usage ofscapegoats is present. By the summer of 1950, Ethel learned that her youngerbrother David Greenglass had identified herself and her husband as participants in the spy ring(pg35). The Rosenbergs are easily comparedto the both Hester Prynne and John Proctor in that all three were used as scapegoats in order tomake their governments look more superior and dominant. Morton Sobell was a friend of the Rosenbergs whom Julius Rosenberg met while at New YorkCity College (pg 38).
