i heard the owl call my name

My personal opinion on why Craven wrote this book is that she wanted to see how much native culture can change and still remain nurturing and strong. Craven deals with the issue of native identity in a thoughtful manner, presenting opposites: those who wish for complete cultural resolution, and those who are stuck in a calcified tradition continued by myth which can, at times, override. Native myths, customs, and character are described with a consistency and vigour which commands attention throughout the novel. Craven creates a world which is different from ours, and reveals it through the experiences of a man who is destined to die. The author presents her characters and their setting with an understanding which speaks of intimate knowledge, almost as if she was there. This is a beautiful story by Margaret Craven about a reverend named Mark, that earns the respect of Indians. This boy talks about the experiences of the revern when he is in the village. He p

Their complex belief system and folklore related strongly to the environment and gave reasons for the existence of everything. He is a young vicar who has not more than two or three years to live, because of an illness, which he doesn't notice before two years. I explained Mark in a couple of paragraphs so that I can make a point of how hard he is trying, and how Craven wants you to know that. He is really interested in the Indian lifestyle and there habits, he tries to help the Indian wherever it's possible. I think Craven wrote this book to show that even with white men trying to suppress Indians, the Indians can till live on. The Indians can communicate with white man satisfactorily enough, considering they had little or no contact with any other white man. In my opinion this often communicates a quality of wisdom about the Indians. roves that he is worthy by fixing up a ruined vicarage. But he also confronted with the fact that the Indians will disappear from the surface in the next time. He experiences the impact when the government declares it legal for Indians to buy liquor and when traders cheat the villagers out of their cultural treasures; he sees the children lose their ties with their families and heritage while living in residential schools among whites He has less than 3 years to live, yet he still trys to learn and side with the Indians. She shows they are just as - if not more intelligent than most other people. Mark is sent in the Village Kingcome, because his Bishop thinks that if he has so few time to learn that would be the best for him. He realises the conflict between the two parties, the old, who hold on their old traditions, and the young, who, like Gordon, "become" a white man, or loose and forget the old stories and traditions. Although the Indians lead a simple natural way of life, it is not fair to say they are simple people.
